Leap of Faith

In this series, Leap of Faith,  I explore how we navigate uncertainty. I'm fascinated by the way the brain presents us with multiple risks and outcomes in a crisis, and how our choices impact the resulting journey.

Inspired by Romanesque Cathedral artisans and illuminated Books of Hours, I've reinterpreted, refreshed and reframed Biblical narratives, to capture their tension and possibilities. I reassemble images to reflect a sense of dislocation, creating an artistic puzzle to solve. I allow each painting to confront me with opportunities and alternative endings. By being prepared to take risks, and even obliterate what seems to be working, I arrive at fresh perspectives and unexpected destinations.

Exposed underlying charcoal marks are intentional, hinting at both what needs to be left behind or even "burned" in order to move forward and make progress. Angelic figures breaking through into the narratives point to a more hope-filled ending than a purely fact-based outlook might cause us to expect. All titles are drawn from poems about the protagonists depicted.
